Kahvi is a pretty important word here in Finland. It's meaning? Coffee.
The Finns love to drink coffee and I am really becoming a coffee lover too. I mostly reserve drinking coffee for at the Rotary meetings on Fridays, but sometimes it's nice to go out with friends to grab a cup too. Lately, we have checked out two coffee houses (Kahvila) and found several other places we want to go to too.
Here in Finland, most people put milk in their coffee and eat pulla with it. Pulla is a treat most similar to a cinnamon roll. It's so tasty and although time consuming to make, it is worth it in the end.
Last Monday was kind of a cold and dark day, so Georgia and I walked down to the coffee house at the harbor close to our school.
They have the best pulla in Lahti, and also some of the biggest. Their pulla is huge (iso = big). The coffee was very good and warming (even though I spilled some of mine, haha).
I wasn't kidding about it being a dark, gloomy sort of day. It was a good day to try out a coffee place.
I really love just walking around the harbor, even if it is chilly. Come wintertime, the lake; Vesijärvi will be frozen, turned into a giant ice skating rink.
School got out early on Thursday, so Georgia (left), Mao (right), and I decided to check out a new coffee place located in a small handycraft shop. It was really nice because we were the only ones there and the shop was pretty home-y and comfortable.
There's the outside of the coffee place from the street. We found a bakery across the street, and bakeries are rare here even though there are always lots of sweets to be found with coffee. That's going to be our next place to check out.
Most families have coffee time at home each day and eat either chocolate (suklaa), ice cream (jäätelö), or some sort of cake or pulla with it.
Happy coffee drinking!
